breeches or jodhpurs for western riding?

Hi. Can anyone explain the difference between breeches and jodhpurs? Also, are there any western riders out there than ride in them? i dont barrel race or anything, just trail ride and trot around an arena. I always just wear jeans, but it gets a little uncomfortable. I would like to have a stretchy type fabric to ride in, that somehow would keep my legs from getting sweaty. (gross i know, but its just how it goes:) Thank you.

I agree with Tomboy that you might feel best in riding tights. Breeches only go to mid-calf and have velcro closures. Jodhpurs go to the ankle and usually have a cuff. Those were traditionally your only two choices. Now they make pants that are sometimes called tights, sometimes schooling breeches, etc., but what you want to look for are the words “elastic at the ankle” instead of velcro or hook and loop closure.

I’ve always been an English rider, but in college did some western riding and wore my breeches/jodhpurs then.

Western Saddles: Top 7 Buying Mistakes

Buying the wrong western saddle is a very common occurrence in the western riding world. It’s also a very expensive learning experience. You can skip this painful lesson by avoiding the top seven western saddle buying mistakes.

1. Buying Pretty. While we’d all like a nice looking saddle, letting looks drive your buying decision is asking for trouble. The quality of the saddle materials and the construction are far more important than the look of a saddle. A poorly made saddle can look awfully pretty, especially to the uninitiated. Don’t fall for this one.

2. Buying Image. Have dreams of riding the range and working the cattle drive? Or maybe riding to an NFR championship buckle in barrel racing? While the cowboy and cowgirl dreams and imagery can be strong and enticing, don’t let those images determine your saddle choice. Choose a saddle type that fits the actual type of riding that you’ll be doing.

3. Buying Cheap. Cheap saddles are not a bargain. Poor quality materials and construction will shorten saddle life, and, more importantly, will cause discomfort and impair movement in your horse. If you can’t afford at least a middle-of-the-road new saddle ($500 and up), then buying used is a great solution. Quality saddles last a long time, making buying a “pre-owned” saddle a smart buy.

4. Buying Dumb. You need to educate yourself on some saddle basics before buying. Ride in as many different saddles as you can. Talk to all the horse people you know about their saddles. Pick the brain of knowledgeable saddle folks. And, always, before purchasing a saddle, know the seller’s tryout and return policies.

5. Buying Selfish. You found a saddle that’s high quality, pretty, and fits you well. You’re all set right? Wrong. You’re forgetting one very important partner in this deal – your horse. If the saddle doesn’t fit your horse well, than the rest doesn’t matter. Make sure you understand the basics of horse fit and determine beforehand whether the saddle will be a good fit for your horse.

6. Buying One-Size-Fits-All. While you shouldn’t need a different saddle for every horse you ride, one saddle will not fit every horse you run across. The best approach is to choose a saddle that will fit the basic physical type of horse that you’ll ride. For instance, I ride Quarter Horses that are on the smaller size. I have a saddle that will fit most horses of this type. If you ride more than one type of horse, you’ll need multiple saddles.

7. Buying Brand (or Endorsement). This one is a little trickier. Buying a well-established brand is not a bad idea. You just need to be aware that a number of saddle brands have been around a long time and the quality of their saddles have varied significantly over time. The quality can also vary over their current product lines. Never just blindly buy by brand without thoroughly inspecting the quality of the saddle in consideration. Additionally, celebrity endorsement can seem like a stamp of approval, but it really doesn’t mean more than that the celebrity is receiving payment for use of his or her name. Very few celebrities have any input into the design and construction of the saddles bearing their name.

Many riders have a tack room full of saddles that didn’t work out. Others are constantly buying and selling saddles in search of just the right one. It doesn’t have to be this way. If you do your homework beforehand to truly understand your horse’s and your own needs, you can purchase the one saddle that will be a match for you, your horse, and your riding activities.

Dressing for Steelhead Fishing in Winter

When I started fishing for winter Steelhead a few years ago, I had nothing. Until then, I was a “fair-weather” fisherman who didn’t really know what cold was. Boy did I find out fast.

I will never forget my first time out. I had just hooked up with a longtime friend of mine who I had not seen since grade school. Steve was going to teach me all about Steelhead & Salmon fishing. It was mid December, the 16th of 1999 I think. We met at Steve’s house at about 5 am. All I was wearing was my jeans, T-shirt, baseball cap, regular shoes and a warm weather jacket in the car.

Steve just looked at me. “Are you nuts?” He said. “You’re going to freeze.” Well, I replied this is about all I have. “Don’t worry about it, I’ll make it. Let’s go” No sooner did we get to the river I was just that, freezing. But hey, I’m stoked because I’m going to catch me a long over-due Steelhead. I remember looking at him as I was just about numb to the core and noticing he was warm as could be. It didn’t take long to ask “Ok, how much is all that and where can I get it”. I wasn’t going to go through that kind of day ever again. By God’s grace, I did catch my first ever Steelhead that day but not without paying a heavy price.

By my next trip out I managed to up my gear with a pair of waders, along with a breathable raincoat. The only thing missing was head wear. “I knew I was forgetting something.” It was another cold day. It was uncomfortable, but at least not unbearable like my first time out. I had a stocking cap, so it ended up being ok.

I tell you my friends, there is nothing like the comfort of being warm. When the temperature is in the 30’s with rain, snow, and sleet. (Yes, I have had all 3!). You will be glad you have the gear. Also, being warm gives you so much more of a good time.

Here is my suggested checklist when going out for a day on the river.

1. Waders. You can find these just about everywhere. Just like anything else, you get what you pay for. I recommend the breathable Simms brand G3’s or G4’s being the top of the line. They do run a bit high, in the price range from about $350 to $699. You can get the Rivertek Stockingfoots for $299. Rivertek is about as low as I would go for winter. You can also go with the long time stand by in Neoprene 3.5 mm. You can get into a pair of these in the price range of $80 to $200.

2. Rain coat. Another must have. Rain coats really come down to your own comfort. Personally, I need to feel loose, and agile. Therefore, I use a tighter, lighter style in Columbia. The bottom line is dry.

3. Your hat. I like the Henschel. A great, quality oil skin hat that will keep your head dry. A dry head is a warm head. I believe these run in the ballpark of $50

4. Underclothing. There are all kinds of things out there now. I use anything that is designed to keep the moisture out and the heat in. Over that I usually wear something of wool, over that my waders. This all depends on how warm or cold blooded you are. Some people like me need 3-4 layers, while others just 1 or 2. Check your local REI or Sporting goods store for these.

One last tip, get yourself a dry bag. You will not regret having an extra set of clothes for the sake of emergency. You never know when you will slip on a rock, or get plain soaked due to heavy weather. Just put your dry bag in the truck or boat. Dry bags can be purchased through Sporting goods store also. Price will depend on size, costing on average $40.

The Mastiff is one of the heaviest of all breeds with some males exceeding 90kg (200lbs). They are powerful, muscular dogs, with a bulk that does not go unnoticed. Mastiffs possess a massive head, wide, square and heavy set, with a short, broad muzzle. Their short double-coat can be colored golden fawn, brindle, tiger, silver, light fawn and apricot. However, whatever color the coat is, all Mastiffs have a black mask around the eyes and nose. The outer-coat is short and coarse, whilst the undercoat is denser, but also short. Mastiffs eyes are dark in color, usually brown or hazel and small in size. The ears of this massive breed are relatively small and shaped like a rounded v, set toward the back of the head and usually darker in color than the overall coat. Mastiffs teeth meet in a scissor, or slightly undershot bite, whilst the tail tapers to the tip from a base set relatively high and is normally long enough to reach the hocks. The Mastiff embodies strength and power, with it´s thick muscular neck, solid bulky body and powerful legs, completing this imposing breed.

TEMPERAMENT

The Mastiff was originally famed for its ferocious guarding abilities and its powerful fighting ability, however today´s Mastiff no longer shows these past traits and is a perfect example of a gentle giant. They are a patient, well-mannered breed, watchful and self-confident, with great affection and softness toward their ´family pack.´ They have an intelligent, alert disposition, without harshness and display much dignity. Whilst many of the past traits have been bred out of the Mastiff, it still possesses an inherent desire to protect its territory and family and if its sheer size is not enough to dissuade potential threats, then it will willing enforce its need to protect. An excellent dog with children in terms of temperament, however care should be taken with younger children due to its large size. They have a calm and docile disposition and are relatively easy to train, responding best to gentle positive reinforcement and patience. They enjoy plenty of companionship and love to be with their ´family pack.´ Levels of intolerance toward strangers changes depending on lineage, however many Mastiff´s will refuse entry to the home by people unknown until welcomed by the handler. Protection training is not needed for this breed as they are naturally protective toward family, home and car. Socialization as a puppy is a must, as unsocialized Mastiffs may be dog aggressive and due to their ominous size this can be a major issue in later life. Snoring, wheezing and drooling are all associated with this breed.

HEIGHT: Dogs 76cm+ (30 inches+), Bitches 69cm+ (27 inches+)
WEIGHT: Dogs 81-91kg (180-200lbs), however some have been known to be much larger, Bitches 79-84kg (175-185lbs)

HEALTH

The mastiff is a particularly large dog demanding correct diet and exercise. A soft surface is recommended for the dog to sleep on in order to prevent the development of calluses, arthritis, and hygroma (an acute inflammatory swelling). Due to the breed’s large size, puppies may potentially be smothered or crushed by the mother during nursing. A whelping box, along with a watchful eye can help avoid accidents. Major issues include hip dysplasia and gastric torsion (bloat). Less common issues include obesity, osteosarcoma, and cystinuria. Problems only rarely found include cardiomyopathy, allergies, vaginal hyperplasia, cruciate ligament rupture, hypothyroidism, OCD, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and persistent pupillary membranes (PPM).

LIVING CONDITIONS

The Mastiff will do fine in an apartment if it receives a good level of exercise. They are inclined to be a little lazy and are very relaxed indoors going about their day with little activity. A small garden or back yard will be sufficient for this breed.

EXERCISE

Regular exercise is a must for Mastiffs, despite their tendencies to avoid it. Sufficient exercise will help to keep them physically fit and mentally healthy. A daily walk is a must like all dogs, however it is recommended to keep them leashed at all times.

LIFE EXPECTANCY: 10-12 years
LITTER: Very broad range from 1-16 puppies

GROOMING

The Mastiff coat is easy to care for and should be brushed with a firm bristle brush and wiped over with a chamois to give it a nice sheen. Bathe and dry shampoo when necessary. The mastiff sheds an average amount all year round.

HISTORY

An ancient breed of the canine world the Mastiff is a descendant of the giant Molosser and the Alaunt. The name Mastiff is derived from the Anglo-Saxon ´masty´ which translates as powerful. The breed is likely to have been brought to Britain by the Romans between the 7th and the 5th Centuries BC. The Romans were familiar with these giant dogs or ones very similar to them and used them in both battle and in gladiatorial combat. For hundreds of years the Mastiff was used principally as a guard dog and draft animal (an animal used to pull loads on carts, sleds or similar transport, another example would be the Shire Horse). It was also used from time to time in bloodsports such as bull and bear baiting and dog fighting. It is believed they arrived on American shores with pilgrims during the 17th Century, however documents only show evidence of Mastiffs from the 18th Century onward. During World War II the breed was reduced to just a handful of dogs in its native Britain, however its existence on foreign shores, especially the United States, ensured its survival and growth in numbers. It was recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1885. The Mastiff has been involved in the breeding of many of today´s modern breeds and has been a constant participant in human history, its feats and achievements litter the documents of our past. One of the most significant tales is of a Mastiff owned by Sir Peers Leigh, who, fighting at the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years´ War, was wounded in battle. His faithful Mastiff stood guard over him, in the thick of battle for several hours until it was eventually killed itself. The progeny of this brave dog would go on to be celebrated in the highest fashion and were credited with preserving the noble traits of the breed for hundreds of years. A Mastiff by the name of Zorba is currently the heaviest dog in the world weighing in at 155.6kg (343lbs).

Does any one know how to change the size of the tag-box for pictures in Facebook? When you tag someone the box is so large and I want it to fit on the person’s face/body. Is there a way I can do this? I tried going to the edge of the box but there are no arrows to adjust the size.

Thanks!

Sorry, but this isn’t possible.

The only thing that you can do is just try to click RIGHT on the person’s face, so that the center of the box is on their face. That way the tag is in the proper place.

Rfid Tagging: The Latest In Grocery Tracking Software

RFID or radio frequency identification tagging is the latest technological advancement in grocery tracking software. They may eventually replace bar codes as the tags become smaller and smaller.

Although they were originally used primarily to keep track of large animals and vehicles, there has been much advancement in the area of miniaturization. In 2009, researchers successfully used the tags to track ants and study their behavior. So, they can easily be used to track inventory, whether the items are large or small.

Dust sized chips have been developed by big companies like Hitachi. Of course, there are limitations with a chip that size. Attaching the antennae is one of them. Another has to do with the limited reading range inherently caused by the small antennae.

But, those are issues to be resolved by scientists. With the standard-sized tags available today, it is possible to inventory groceries quickly and easily.

The devices are also useful for reordering. RFID tags and real-time grocery tracking software can be used to immediately notify managers when an important item needs to be restocked. In one academic study, use of the technology was able to reduce the number of out-of-stock items by 30%.

Reduced loss is another important advantage. Companies that had historically experienced significant shrink have used the technology to address that issue. Monitors at the exits sound an alarm to let your employees know when something is walking out the door. This technology is gradually taking the place of other electronic monitoring devices.

Many of your vendors may already be accustomed to the use of RFID on pallet items. It is expected that even the smallest vendors will, in years to come, be able to use the tags on their outbound shipments.

This latest advancement in grocery tracking software makes self-checkouts more accurate and easier to use than the current bar-code technology. Some grocery stores, including Freedom Shopping, Inc, are already making use of the technology for their self-checkout systems.

The tags can also be included on employee name tags. They can be swiped at the register to allow cashiers to sign in quickly and easily. This also eliminates the problem of one cashier using another’s sign in code.

Business owners that decide not to take advantage of the latest grocery tracking software will be unable to compete in a short period of time. The cost of installing an RFID system will be recouped quickly in reduced shrink and manpower, as well as in other areas.

My dog’s red bandana rubbed off on his neck!!?

I recently had purchased some fabric for Christmas and I thought that it would be cool to cut some bandannas for my dogs out of the red fabric. They have had them on for a couple of days now and on my maltese(he’s white) I noticed a red ring around his neck!! I immediately remhoved his bandanna and I wet a paper towel with cold water and I wet his top coat but it didn’t come off. is there anything i can use to get the ring around his neck off?? He’s a REDNECK!!

I would give ONE bath a try. Maybe with a whitening shampoo. Don’t over-do it and don’t scrub too much. If it doesn’t come off, your best be is to just be patient – it will come off eventually. It’s not worth stressing your dog out over it.

I would suggest washing anything you want to put on your dog in the washing machine before hand to get out the excess pigments.

A Chef Uniform – Designed for Style or Necessity?

A chef’s uniform has not changed much over the years. In fact, the image of a big white apron and a puffy hat has become the hallmark of a chef. But the complete uniform of a chef doesn’t comprise just that. The uniform consists of different pieces of clothing although most chefs do not wear all of those. Big restaurants or hotel chains insist on the chef wearing the complete uniform but small food joints have no such compulsion.

Chef’s uniform

A chef’s uniform generally comprises a chef hat, a bandanna, scarf, bow tie, a chef neckerchief; apron, chef jacket, chef pants, belt, gloves as well as shoes. A chef’s hat, scarf and apron are worn by almost all chefs. Ties and scarves are worn by most chefs since they act as sweat absorbents. A bandana mostly acts as a sweat blocker. Most chefs wear aprons or waistcoats as these serve to be more comfortable than the fancy jackets. Designer jackets are preferred by big restaurant chains because it lends a sophisticated look to the chef. The purpose of a chef hat is to prevent stray hair strands from finding its way into a customer’s dish. But nowadays, skull caps are used instead, whereas the hats are worn mostly by the helpers in the kitchen. Aprons and bibs are designed on special order. There is no standard color or design of the apron. The chef’s pants are mostly loose and baggy. The entire costume of the chef has been designed keeping in mind the kitchen scenario. The kitchen is a hot place and so loose fitted clothing is a norm. There is no fixed rule regarding the design and color of the pants. Chefs prefer a deep shade since the stains and splatters would not be as distinguishable as those would be in a light colored pair of pants.

Is it all about style or necessity?

The uniform definitely has been designed for necessity because each part of the uniform has a purpose. All of it is directed towards comfortable preparation of hygienic food. But the profession is becoming more and more glamorous with each passing day. Chefs are no longer the unrecognized faces behind kitchen doors. They are talented people who actively engage in public relations, and often directly interact with diners. Therefore, being presentable is of profound importance to them. The chef’s uniform reflects the status of the eatery. So, most chefs don extremely fashionable outfits. But this is applicable to high profile restaurants and food chains only.

So that is all about a chef’s stylish gears. For more information on this topic you can refer to information found on the internet.

Tapestry Art – Verdure Tapestries

Tapestries were produced in Europe from around the twelfth century, when it is believed, the art of weaving was introduced from the East. It is thought some small scale Tapestries may have been produced during Medieval times. However, it was actually towards the end of this period, and throughout the Renaissance, when Tapestry Art production reached a pinnacle. From the fourteenth to the seventeenth century, France and the Low Countries would create some of the most incredible Tapestry Art ever produced. Up until ‘The Hundred Year War’ from 1337 to 1453, Paris was considered the centre of production for Tapestry Art in Europe. However, as war raged in Europe, many weavers left the France and moved North, primarily to Holland and Belgium. Many Tapestries were destroyed, but after the war a new period of learning and development would begin.

The Renaissance marked an important revival of the Arts, and major design changes came about, within Tapestry Art. By the second half of the fifteenth century many workshops, especially in Northern France and the Southern Netherlands regions, were exporting Tapestries throughout Europe. By the end of the fifteenth century, the Brussels Tapestry workshops began to dominate production. Although some French, independent, Tapestry weavers did continue working, they could not match the sheer scale by which Brussels and the Netherlands were producing Tapestries. Once again, war would disrupt Tapestry production, as weavers were forced to relocate in Europe. Later, toward the end of the sixteenth century, Paris, once again, along with Munich and Delft would become the recognized ‘European Centres’ for Tapestry production.

It is not entirely certain where ‘Verdure Tapestries’ were first produced. However, it is known that by the sixteenth century, they had become a recognized Tapestry Art form. The word ‘Verdure’ is a derivative of the French word ‘Vert’, meaning green. Initially, ‘Verdure Tapestries’ were characterized by their green tones, complex foliage and flower motives. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ became regarded as works of art in their own right, yet were considered relatively inexpensive at the time. As their popularity rose, more expensive designs incorporating wildlife were produced. It is the more elaborately designed ‘Verdure Tapestries’ that we most often associate with the Verdure style today. For centuries ‘Verdure Tapestries’ remained highly popular, and were made on a huge scale for exportation. That was, until the arrival of wallpaper, which served as more economical way to decorate a room.

In recent years ‘Verdure Tapestries’ have seen a revival, and is a popular choice of Tapestry Art for the modern home. A ‘Verdure Tapestry’ can change a room, by creating a striking and impressive focal point. Something which cannot be matched by wallpaper alone. If you are looking for a classic example of Tapestry Art, the subtle earthy tones of ‘Verdure Tapestries’ can deliver that, whilst also being compatible with almost any style of décor. They are available is a range of sizes, which means you can enjoy their aesthetic beauty virtually anywhere, and within budget. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ are historically considered to be among some of the most famous Tapestries ever produced. Today they have been accurately recreated for you to enjoy in your own home.

‘Verdure Tapestries’ are highly stylized. However, you will find a good selection of themes to choose from. Fawn and Fauna, plus wonderful images of French Châteaux, classic gardens and scenic landscapes. The lush greenery depicted in ‘Verdure Tapestries’, along with the idyllic scenery cannot help but create a beautifully harmonious and natural focal point within a room. Peaceful, intricate, yet unobtrusive imagery which will complement and add to the ambience of your home. A Tapestry is an investment that will be there for generations to come. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ have always been admired by collectors and art enthusiasts alike. Today, these Tapestries are produced by some of the most respected Tapestry Art manufacturers in the world. Since the invention of the Jacquard Loom, and the development of computerized machinery, Tapestry Art has become an accessible commodity. Of course, you are by no means limited to ‘Verdure Tapestries’, there is an impressive variety of traditional and contemporary Tapestry Art available. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ appeal to many people. However, with such a huge selection of Tapestries available, you could never be short of inspiration for your home.

Abetta’s Cordura saddle seat or suede seat for more grip?

Ok, my horse is a 3yrs old, VERY spooky demon… And, i’m not an experienced rider (lol). My only saddle is an aussie one with a smooth leather seat which I hate (I fell off everytime). I’m looking to buy a new one, a synthetic western, and I like the look of the Abetta ones with a Cordura seat.
http://www.buyabetta.com/products/saddles/act/20525.htm

I’m looking for maximum grip.
I know that a traditionnal suede seat does have a good grip, but I never touched some Cordura nylon so I don’t know how it’s like.

So please, if you own a Cordura saddle, tell me if it’s SAFE and compfortable or not…
I want to stay glued to my saddle
(i’m only doing trail rides btw)

TY!

Both my saddles are Cordura and I like them both. I have a problem with staying put also. I find that shortening my stirrups helps me more than any particular kind of seat would.
If my knees are slightly bent I feel much more safe and secure
