6 Tips to Test the Waters Before Converting to a Dollar Plus Store
Many entrepreneurs have been successful in their efforts to open a dollar store. They have been able to open and quickly build their retail businesses. Yet at some point they begin to look at other business models to see if there might be a way to squeeze even more profits from the dollar store merchandise they sell. One format that strikes many as worthy of investigation is opening a dollar plus store. In this article I present 6 tips to help test the dollar plus waters in your existing dollar store.
Tip #1) Open a small area designated as a dollar plus store within your existing store. This option makes sense for many. Why risk losing existing shoppers and even jeopardizing your existing business just to see what might happen if you were to convert to a dollar plus format? Why not test the marketplace first to minimize your risks? The dollar store merchandise purchased for dollar plus sales can be available to shoppers during normal business hours in your current location. Do you want to draw the attention of your shoppers? Another option is to only offer dollar plus items at special times; possibly during the weekend only.
Tip #2) Surround the designated area so there is no chance for confusion. If you plan to test dollar plus store format, don’t allow any chance for confusion regarding the price of your dollar store merchandise. You don’t want any questions about whether an item is $1 or it is more. Totally surround the dollar plus area and create a formal entry point to help avoid confusion. It might be worthwhile for larger stores to staff the area initially as well.
Tip #3) Be sure to use large signs with extra big letters to further avoid confusion. One more step toward the goal of eliminating problems is your signage. Create big, bold signs that clearly inform those entering the designated area all items are dollar plus if they proceed. Make sure the sign is welcoming to those entering. But don’t lose track of the mission of your signs – to help eliminate shopper confusion.
Tip #4) Determine the right experimental products for your store. It’s not necessary to create a whole new store selling dollar plus merchandise within your existing store. Select 2-4 strong selling departments and then a few dollar store merchandise categories within those departments. Those strong sellers are the items you need to locate, purchase and bring into the dollar plus area of your store.
Tip #5) You are not working to open a dollar store – make sure dollar store merchandise doesn’t reappear with a higher price tag during your testing. One of the first things everyone will be looking for is items previously sold for $1 that are now marked higher. Don’t create a negative experience by making that mistake. Display only new items not carried before that are clearly worth more than $1. Make sure the perceived value of items being sold exceeds the selling price you have chosen to keep shoppers excited.
Tip #6) Employees need to understand you are performing a test. They need to have a sound explanation to provide to curious shoppers. After all, nervous employees will do nothing to maintain the calm you want in your store. Speak with employees and make sure they understand what you are doing. Make sure they understand this move is to test whether shoppers want the exciting, new products you’ve located for them.
To your dollar plus store success!
